Freiheight - Pichação Monospace Banner Font
This project was developed under the direction of Professor Jakob Runge and was one of my first independent projects at the Münster School of Design. The task was to develop a font that captures and reproduces the spirit of a youth subculture.
Pichação is a street art subculture that originates from Brazil. It consists of tagging done in a distinctive, cryptic style, mainly on walls and vacant buildings. Many pichadores (pichação painters) compete to paint in high and inaccessible places, using such techniques as free climbing and abseiling to reach the locations. Pichação is extremely condemned both by the society and the government.
Freiheight is a handwritten monospace banner font that captures the aesthetics and thoughts of the rebellious pichadores. It consists of 78 unique letters plus special characters (three versions for each letter) and coded with a random generator to insure unique looking words.
